Time Magazine has published a comprehensive article on How We Get Addicted.
One of the most interesting questions raised in the article is why humans can become addicted to drugs and alcohol:

Addiction is so harmful, evolution should have weeded it out by now. If it’s hard to drive under the influence, imagine running from a tiger.

The article points out that an effective treatment program must be about 90 days of intensive treatment to be effective, which must be followed up with ongoing regular treatment.
