NSW Drug Testing Fleet Expanded
New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma has increased the number of roadside vans in western Sydney from one to three as part of the state’s new random drug testing scheme for drivers following a succesful trial in 2007 of the initial van. The initial trials resulted 170 drivers testing positive in 7,000 tests, which works out in about 2.5%, a higher positive test rate than alcohol breath tests. The higher positive rate is attributed to the police strategy of targeting places likely to have drug users, such as nighclub strips.
